Have you ever heard of athletes having an injury due to overworked or overused muscles in the legs? Most of them may have suffered the condition called shin splints or the “tibial stress syndrome”. This condition or injury is the result of an inflammation due to tendon injury and the surrounding tissues in the front of the outer leg.
This condition is characterized by symptoms that can be easily detected by the person suffering from it and can have immediate medical treatment. Whether you are an athlete or just an ordinary individual who is just fond of working out, more specifically jogging and performing other leg-related exercises, this can be very helpful to you in the early detection of this injury. The leg and calf muscles are the most common points and areas where you can detect this condition.
If you feel any of the following symptoms, you better have your leg checked before anything worse can happen:
Pain is the most common sign or symptom of this injury. The area where you can assume that you have such injury is having pain below the knee, in the front of the outer leg. The pain can be bearable for the first few days, depending on the severity of the injury in the tendon or tissues of the front leg. Once you are experiencing this, then it must have mean that you have an injury in your muscles or tendons.
Pain can be felt when you have done a strenuous activity using your leg. This is our body’s “warning signal” to indicate that there is something wrong going on in your body or body part. Sometimes, the pain is bearable and you can still run but in other cases, the pain is way too much to handle.Whatever the situation might be, once pain is present in your front leg, better have it checked.
The pain associated with shin splints can be felt either during the strenuous leg activity like running and exercising or after one has stopped exercising and at rest. There are cases when the pain is constant throughout the activity and at rest.
Swelling of the leg is another common symptom of shin splints. The sufferer’s leg is swollen because of the tight muscles or tendons and tissues of the front leg. It can be the result of overusing the muscles of the leg or any other physical factors.
When the muscles of the leg are inflamed, the tendency is that the leg will appear bigger because the swollen muscle or tendon pushes aside the surrounding tissue and unaffected muscle. This will also result to severe pain.
Having shin splints can lead to some various muscle or bone problems. The best way to prevent the occurrence of far more complicated problems is to detect earlier by watching out for such signs and symptoms of tibial stress syndrome.
